Set Up Shippo for Return Shipping Labels

Connect Shippo so Exchange It can generate return shipping labels for your customers, and choose whether those labels default to scan-based billing. Use this when you want return labels created through your own Shippo account.

Where to find it

Go to Settings > Shipping Integrations > Shippo Integration.

Prerequisites

This integration requires an Advanced plan. The Shippo option is disabled unless your plan name includes 'Advanced'; on a non-Advanced plan you'll see an Upgrade button instead of an editable checkbox. You'll also need a Shippo API key from your Shippo account to generate labels.

Set it up

  1. Show Shippo in my Return Shipping Label options — Turns on Shippo as a return shipping label option so labels can be generated for customers. Default: off (false). Enabling it unlocks the scan-based default and the API key field.
  2. Default to scan-based return labels for USPS, FedEx, and UPS (charge only when scanned) — Sets return labels to default to scan-based, meaning you're charged only when the label is scanned. Default: off (false). Per the in-app help text, you can override this per-return if needed.
  3. Shippo API Key — Stores the Shippo API key used to generate return labels. Default: empty. Enter your key here. If a key is already saved, the field shows masked dots as a password; to change it, clear the field and enter a new key, then save.

How these settings work together

Turning on Show Shippo in my Return Shipping Label options is what enables the Default to scan-based return labels control — while Shippo is off, the scan-based checkbox stays disabled. Both the Shippo option and the scan-based default are also gated to the Advanced plan.

What changes when you turn this on

Saving your settings persists the Shippo configuration to your shop: the API key is encrypted when settings are saved (the field then displays as masked dots). When the scan-based default is left on, return labels are created as scan-based (is_return) so they're billed only when scanned; turning it off changes that default. The API key you store is the credential the app reads when generating return labels through Shippo.

Plan requirements

The Shippo option and the scan-based return label default both require a plan whose name includes 'Advanced'. Without it, these controls are disabled and an Upgrade button is shown.
