Setting Up Time-Based Return Rules

Updated Sep 29, 2026

Use Time-Based Return Rules to close return requests once an order passes an age limit, and to warn customers on the Returns Portal when their return window has expired. Turn these on when your return policy only allows returns within a fixed number of days.

Where to find it

Go to Returns Portal > Rules > Time-Based Return Rules.

Set it up

  1. Block return requests after a certain number of days — When enabled, return requests are blocked once the configured number of days since the order has passed. Default: unchecked (off).

  2. Days until return requests expire — The numeric window, in days, after which return requests are considered expired. This value is the threshold used by the blocking rule and the portal expiry banner. Input is sanitized to digits only. Default: 30.

  3. Block expired requests on Returns Portal — When checked, customers see a banner on the Returns Portal indicating that the return period has expired, enforcing the time limit on the storefront. Default: unchecked (off).

  4. Returns Portal warning banner heading — The heading of the expiry banner shown to customers when an order is past the configured days-to-expiration. Default: "Return Period Expired".

  5. Returns Portal warning banner text — The body text of the expiry banner shown when a customer's return window has expired. Default explains that the order was sent more than 30 days ago and the policy does not allow returns past that period.

  6. Time Conditions for Tags — Managed through the Time Rule Conditions control, each entry pairs order tags with their own days-to-expiration value, showing a warning banner on the Returns Portal based on order tags and time. Default: one entry with a 30-day expiration window and no tags.

If you use a second portal language, set the second-language Returns Portal warning banner heading (default: "(Translate) Return Period Expired") and Returns Portal warning banner text. These apply only when the second portal language is active, which requires the Advanced plan.

What changes when you turn this on

  • The Days until return requests expire value is saved as a number (the input accepts digits only) and defines the expiry threshold used by both the blocking rule and the portal banner.
  • With Block return requests after a certain number of days enabled, requests are blocked once an order is older than that day count.
  • With Block expired requests on Returns Portal checked, customers whose order is past the day count see the warning banner on the Returns Portal, using the heading and text you configured. This enforces the time limit on the storefront.
  • Time Conditions for Tags entries persist as tag-plus-days pairs, each triggering its own portal warning banner based on the order's tags and age.

Plan requirements

The second-language banner heading and text apply only when the second portal language is enabled, which requires the Advanced plan. All other settings in this section are available on any plan.
