Configuring Return Rules in ExchangeIt: Product, Order, and Time-Based Policies
ExchangeIt empowers Shopify merchants to tailor their return policies through customizable rules, ensuring that return processes align with specific business needs. By configuring return rules based on products, orders, or timeframes, merchants can manage returns more effectively, enhance customer satisfaction, and maintain control over return conditions. This flexibility allows for precise return management, accommodating various scenarios such as non-returnable items, order-specific policies, and time-sensitive returns.
Product-Based Return Rules
With Product-Based Return Rules, you can control which products are eligible for return based on their tags. This gives you fine-grained control over your return policy, allowing you to block returns for specific types of products (e.g. sale or seasonal items) or only allow returns for specific items.
Use product tags to control return eligibility:
Enable Product Tag Rules:
Turn on this setting to manage returns using tags. Choose to:
Block products with certain tags from being returned (default), or
Allow only products with specific tags to be returned.
Add Non-returnable Tags:
Enter tags like winter-sale
, summer-sale
, etc. Tags are case-sensitive and can be added in bulk using commas.
Skip Block for Certain Reasons:
Allow returns for non-returnable items only when specific reasons (e.g., “Color too Dark”, “I changed my mind”) are selected by the customer.
Order-Based Return Rules
With Order-Based Return Rules, you can manage return eligibility based on order-level tags. This allows you to restrict returns for entire orders placed under specific conditions—such as sale events, special promotions, or discontinued collections—ensuring your return policy reflects unique order contexts.
Use order tags to block return eligibility at the order level:
Enable Order Tag Rules:
When enabled, orders with specified tags will be blocked from returns.
Example tags: block-me
, Discontinued
Tags are case-sensitive and can be added in bulk using commas.
Skip Block for Certain Reasons:
Allow returns for blocked orders only if the customer selects a valid reason (e.g., “Color Too Light”, “Too large”, “I changed my mind”).
Country-Based Return Rules
ExchangeIt allows you to restrict or permit returns based on the customer’s shipping country. This is ideal for merchants who:
Ship internationally but want to limit returns to specific regions (e.g., due to logistics costs).
Need to comply with local return regulations.
Want to display clear warnings to customers in non-supported countries.
Enable Country Restrictions
Toggle "Block return requests from countries NOT selected below" to enforce restrictions.
Add Eligible Countries
Enter countries manually (e.g., France,Spain,United Kingdom,Canada
) without spaces between commas.
Time-Based Return Rules
With Time-Based Return Rules, you can control how many days after fulfillment customers are allowed to request a return. This helps enforce clear return windows, reduce abuse, and align return eligibility with your store policies.
Enable Time-Based Rules:
Turn on this setting to prevent return requests submitted after a certain number of days post-fulfillment.
Example: Set the window to 40 days to allow returns only within 40 days of order fulfillment.
Add Conditional Time Rules by Product Tag:
Apply different return windows to specific products by setting conditions based on product tags.
Example: Products tagged with
SALE
orDiscounted
may only be returned within 10 days of fulfillment.Tags are case-sensitive (e.g., “SALE” ≠ “sale”).
You can apply multiple tags per condition.
Multiple Conditions Support:
You can create multiple custom rules using the + New Condition button, with each condition having its own tags and time limits.
