Adding an Automated Note to the Original Order on Quick Exchanges

Use this group to have Exchange It automatically write a note onto the customer's original order each time a quick exchange is processed, so your team can see the exchange details directly from the source order. This is handy for keeping a paper trail of what was restocked and exchanged without leaving Shopify.

Where to find it

Go to Settings > Quick Exchanges > Original Order > Original Order Note.

Set it up

  1. Apply an automated note to the original order — Turn this on to have the app add an automated note to the original order. When enabled, the note text field below becomes editable. Default: on.

  2. Note applied to the original order — The text of the note that gets applied to the original order. This field is disabled until the checkbox above is enabled. It supports templating variables so the note reflects the actual items involved:

    • {exchange_order_name} = Exchange order name/number
    • {% foreach restock %}...{% foreach end %} = repeated text for each restocked item
    • {restock_product.title}, {restock_product.variant.title}, {restock_product.variant.sku}, {restock_product.quantity}
    • {% foreach exchange %}...{% foreach exchange end %} = repeated text for each exchange item
    • {exchange_product.title}, {exchange_product.variant.title}, {exchange_product.variant.sku}, {exchange_product.quantity}

    The default value is Exchange Created ({exchange_order_name}): {% foreach restock %}{restock_product.title} - {restock_product.variant.title}: {restock_product.quantity} (restocked){% foreach end %}.

    A valid example is Exchange Created ({exchange_order_name}): {% foreach restock %}{restock_product.title} - {restock_product.variant.title}: {restock_product.quantity} (restocked){% foreach end %}.

Writing valid note text

When editing the note, keep these validation rules in mind: your curly braces must match, the foreach loop tags must be present and correctly opened/closed, and you cannot use special characters such as \, ', ", or `. If the field shows an error, check for an unbalanced brace or a stray special character.

How these settings work together

The Apply an automated note to the original order checkbox enables the Note applied to the original order text field — until the checkbox is on, the note text field stays disabled and cannot be edited.

What changes when you turn this on

Both values are stored on your shop's app settings (applyOriginalOrderNote and textOriginalOrderNote) and are read by the server when a quick exchange runs. With the checkbox enabled and a valid template saved, the app renders your note text — substituting the exchange order name and looping over restocked and/or exchanged items — and applies it as the automated note on the original order.
