Automatically Add Tags to Exchange Orders

Updated Sep 29, 2026

Use this group to define tags that are added automatically to the Exchange Order generated when a customer exchanges an item. This is useful when you want exchange-related orders to be easy to filter or route inside Shopify.

Where to find it

Go to Settings > Exchange Requests > Exchange Order Tags.

Set it up

  1. Enable Add tags to the Exchange Order. When this is checked, the tags you configure below are automatically added to the Exchange Order. This checkbox is turned on by default.
  2. Type a tag into the input and use the Add tag button to add it. Each tag is limited to 40 characters. You can add several tags at once by separating them with commas without spaces (for example, tag1,tag_2,tag three). The tags input starts empty by default.
  3. Review your tags. Each saved tag appears as a removable chip, so you can delete any tag you no longer want.

Helper text on the card also notes that before placing an exchange you will still have the option to remove any or add more tags.

What changes when you turn this on

The tags you enter are stored as a single comma-separated value. When you add a tag, it is concatenated to the existing list (joined with a comma), and the saved tags are rendered as individual removable chips by splitting that comma-separated value. These stored tags only take effect while Add tags to the Exchange Order is enabled; when enabled, they are automatically added to the Exchange Order created from a return, and you can still remove or add more tags before the exchange is placed.
