Customizing the Return Request Item-Selection Step

This settings group controls the text and colors on the item-selection step of the customer-facing returns portal, where shoppers pick which items and how many units to return. Use it to reword prompts, translate them for a second language, and make selected item cards stand out.

Go to Returns Portal > Customize Portal > Return Request — Item Selection.

Prerequisites

Most fields in this group are available on any plan. The second-language versions of the text fields only apply when a second portal language is enabled, which is an Advanced-plan feature. See Plan requirements below.

Set it up

Each field is a text input in the Return Request — Item Selection block. Edit a value and the live portal preview updates as you type.

1. Item Selection Heading — the main heading above the item cards where customers choose which items to return. Default: What Items would you like to return?
2. Item Selection Helper Text — the helper line beneath the heading that guides customers on selecting quantities. Default: Please select a quantity for each item you want to return
3. Quantity Selector Text — the prompt on each item's quantity selector. Default: Pick quantity
4. Reason Selector Text — the prompt for the return-reason selector on each item card. Default: Select Reason (required)
5. Reason Note Placeholder — the placeholder for the per-item reason note field. Default: Reason note
6. "Optional" Text — the word used to mark optional fields (such as an optional note or image). Default: optional
7. "Required" Text — the word used to mark fields a customer must provide (such as a required image or note, as configured per return reason). Default: required
8. "Drag and Drop" Text — the prompt shown in the image upload (FilePond) drag-and-drop area, used when a reason allows or requires image uploads. Default: Drag & Drop your files or Browse
9. Headings color — sets the color of the section headings on this step. Enter a color value (for example a hex code). Default: #000
10. Selected Line Item Border color — the border color that highlights a line item once the customer selects it for return. Default: #000

What changes when you turn this on

Each field is stored on your shop's returns portal settings and feeds the item-selection portal preview (portal-request-items). When a customer reaches the item-selection step, they see your heading and helper text above the item cards, your quantity and reason-selector prompts on each card, your note placeholder in the note input, and your "optional" / "required" wording next to the applicable fields. Selecting an item highlights its card using the Selected Line Item Border color, and section headings render in the Headings color. The "Drag and Drop" text appears in the upload area on cards whose return reason allows or requires an image.

Plan requirements

Editing the second-language versions of these fields requires the Advanced plan. The second-language values only take effect when a second portal language is enabled. Their translation defaults mirror the primary fields, for example (Translate) What Items would you like to return? for the heading, (Translate) Pick quantity for the quantity selector, (Translate) Select Reason (required) for the reason selector, (Translate) Reason note for the note placeholder, (Translate) optional, (Translate) required, and (Translate) Drag & Drop your files or Browse. To edit them, select the second language on the Customize Portal tab and update the same fields.
