Offer a Post-Return Discount with Upselling
Updated Sep 29, 2026
Upselling lets you win back a returning customer by offering them a percentage discount on their next order, shown on the Returns Tracker after they finish a return. Use it when you want to convert a return into a follow-up sale, with ExchangeIt creating and managing the Shopify discount for you.
Where to find it
Go to Returns Portal > Upselling > Upsell discount to configure the offer, and Returns Portal > Upselling > Upsell Button Preview to set the label customers see.
Prerequisites
Upselling requires the Advanced plan. Without it the offer control is disabled and an "Upgrade" button is shown in its place.
Set it up
- Next order offer — Choose whether returning customers are offered a discount. Selecting "Offer a percentage discount after a return" turns the feature on; "Do not offer a discount" turns it off. It is off by default.
- Discount % — Set the percentage discount offered on the next order. This field is where you enter the amount for the offer. It defaults to 0, and negative values are rejected with a "Cannot be negative." error.
- Offer button label — Set the wording of the discount button shown to customers on the returns portal. The default is "Keep Shopping with a % Discount off on your new order". If you edit with a second language active, the label is stored separately (its default is "(Translate) Keep Shopping with a % Discount off on your new order"). You can preview the result in the Upsell Button Preview.
What changes when you turn this on
When the offer is enabled and you save, ExchangeIt provisions a Shopify discount automatically. The server only creates a discount when the offer is on and the discount amount is greater than 0; otherwise no discount is issued. The generated discount is titled after the percentage you set (for example, an "ExchangeIt-…-percent-off" code), and a status row above the choice list reflects the live Shopify discount state (Active, Inactive, or No active discount). The button label you configure is the text customers tap to redeem the offer on the Returns Tracker.
Plan requirements
The entire Upselling feature — the offer toggle, the Discount % field, and the discount it provisions — requires the Advanced plan.
