Styling the Returns Portal With the Global Theme

Updated Sep 30, 2026

The Global Theme settings let you control the colors, corner rounding, background image, and advanced CSS that apply to your whole returns portal. Use them to match the portal's look to your storefront brand.

Where to find it

Go to Returns Portal > Customize Portal > Global Theme.

Set it up

Each field accepts standard CSS values and is reflected in the portal previews as you edit.

  1. Background color — Sets the overall page/container background color for the returns portal. Accepts CSS color values (the placeholder shows rgb(245,245,245)). Default: rgb(245,245,245).
  2. Card color — Sets the background color of the cards within the portal. Accepts CSS color values (placeholder #ffffff). Default: #ffffff.
  3. Text color — Sets the global body text color applied across the entire portal. Accepts a CSS color value (placeholder #000). Default: #000.
  4. Cards' border radius — Controls the corner rounding of cards across the portal (placeholder 25px). Default: 25px.
  5. Buttons' border radius — Controls the corner rounding of buttons across the portal (placeholder 24px). Default: 24px.
  6. Background image URL — Paste a URL to an image to use as the portal background. Helper text recommends 1920×1080px or larger and under 2MB, and suggests uploading images in Shopify Admin → Settings → Files. When a value is present, an inline preview thumbnail appears, and a clear button empties the field. Default: empty.
  7. Custom CSS (Advanced) — A free-form, multiline field for advanced styling applied to the entire portal (the placeholder shows an h1 rule example). This field is disabled until you click the edit label action, which guards against accidental changes; edits reset after saving. Default: empty.

What changes when you turn this on

These values are stored on your shop's returns portal style settings and feed the generated theme CSS used by every portal preview. Changing a color or border radius recolors or reshapes the corresponding element (page background, cards, body text, cards, buttons) throughout the customer-facing portal. Adding a Background image URL applies that image as the portal background and shows a preview thumbnail in the editor. Anything you enter in Custom CSS (Advanced) is passed through as custom CSS applied to the entire portal, letting you override styles the standard fields don't cover.
