Processing Returns and Exchanges

What Happens When You Create an Exchange Order

Updated Sep 30, 2026

When a return moves forward as an exchange, Exchange It creates a new order in your Shopify store for the replacement items and can optionally send the customer an invoice for it.

When it happens

This effect runs when you process a return as an exchange and Exchange It creates the exchange order for the replacement items.

What Exchange It does

Exchange It creates the exchange order from the order data supplied for the return, then records the result. If the request is flagged to send an invoice and the created order has a valid Shopify order id, Exchange It opens a Shopify client for your store and, when a customer email is present, runs the orderInvoiceSend mutation to email the invoice for the new exchange order to that customer. If no invoice is requested, no order id is returned, or no customer email is available, the invoice step is skipped and the exchange order is simply created.

What gets recorded

Exchange It writes the outcome to the return log under the create_order entry, storing both the payload sent to create the order and the response returned by Shopify.

If it fails

The invoice email step is run safely and its error is captured separately, so a failure to send the invoice does not undo the exchange order that was already created.
