Configure Refund Options for Quick Exchanges
Updated Oct 12, 2026
This article explains how to control what refundable amounts appear on the original order during a Quick Exchange, and how store credit is issued. Use it when you want to surface (or hide) product tax and original shipping, offer store credit refunds, or defer store credit issuance to your own provider.
Refund Options on the original order
The Refund Options determine which amounts are presented as refundable in the Refund panel of the original order. To find them, go to Settings > Quick Exchanges > Original Order.
Show the tax for refund products
When enabled, the app calculates product tax on the refunded items and gives you the option to include it in the total refund amount. Per the in-app helper text, this setting is primarily intended for USA sales taxes. When it is off, tax is not surfaced for refund products. This setting is off by default.
Show the shipping paid on the original order
When enabled, the app shows the shipping fees the customer originally paid and gives you the option to include that amount in the total refund. When off, the original shipping fee is not displayed as a refundable amount. This setting is off by default.
Allow store credit refunds (Digital Gift Card)
Under Settings > Quick Exchanges > Original Order > Refund Options, enable Allow refunds as Store Credit (Digital Gift Card) to offer the customer a refund in the form of a Shopify Digital Gift Card that is emailed to them. This option then appears in the Refund panel of the original order alongside the standard refund methods. When it is off, only the standard refund methods are offered. This setting is off by default.
Control how store credit is issued
When customers resolve a return with store credit, the Store credit issuance setting controls who actually issues that credit. You'll find it under Returns Portal > Customer Options > Store Credit Issuance.
- Default (Exchange It issues store credit) — Exchange It issues the store credit itself. This is the default.
- Custom (via Zapier) — Exchange It processes the return but does not issue store credit. Instead, it defers to your connected Zapier integration so credit can be issued through your own provider (for example, a loyalty or store-credit app).
This section only appears when the "Refund with store credit" resolution option is enabled in your Resolution Options. If you don't see it, enable that resolution option first.
Troubleshooting: store credit issuance choice won't save
Because the save payload deep-merges settings, the host settings page must include the top-level store credit field for your issuance choice to persist. If your selection reverts after saving, confirm that the Store Credit Issuance section is actually rendering (which requires the "Refund with store credit" resolution option to be enabled) before changing the value.
