Configuring Exchange and Return Fees for Exchange Requests

Updated Sep 29, 2026

This settings group lets you charge for exchanges and returns in three ways: a default shipping charge on exchanges, a flat product fee added to exchange orders, and a restocking fee deducted from refunds. Use it when you want to recover shipping or handling costs, or discourage low-value exchanges.

Where to find it

Go to Settings > Exchange Requests > Exchange Options and open the Fees section.

Prerequisites

  • The Set a default shipping charge option requires the Advanced plan.
  • Set a default shipping charge also requires the Exchange Method to be set to Original Order Exchanges; the checkbox stays disabled until that is enabled, and a banner reminds you shipping charges are only available with Original Order Exchanges.
  • The refund fee inputs (Fee type, amount/percentage, and the Store Credit waiver) only become active after you turn on Deduct a return fee from refunds.

Set it up

  1. Set a default shipping charge — Adds a default shipping charge to exchanges when the app creates exchange fulfillments on the original order. When enabled, the fee is added to the return as a shipping charge and can be adjusted per exchange. Default: off (false). This checkbox is disabled unless you are on the Advanced plan and using Original Order Exchanges.

  2. Add an exchange fee by default — Adds a product line-item fee to exchange orders. When enabled, use the Select Product button to pick the Shopify product that represents the fee; the customer is charged that product's price once per exchange regardless of item count, and it can be toggled on or off per exchange. This works with both Original Order and New Order exchanges. Default: off (false).

  3. Deduct a return fee from refunds — Turns on a restocking/return fee that is subtracted from the customer's refund total when you process returns (for example, a $100 item with a 10% fee refunds $90). This works with both Original Order and New Order exchanges. Default: off (false).

  4. Fee type — Choose whether the refund fee is a Flat amount or a Percentage. The choice switches which input is shown: a currency-prefixed flat amount field or a percentage field. Default: flat.

  5. Waive fee for Store Credit refunds — When enabled, the refund fee is not deducted from Store Credit (gift card) refunds, only from refunds to the original payment method. Default: off (false).

If you enable both the exchange fee and the refund fee, a caution banner warns that a customer could be charged both. Review both settings together to avoid double-charging.

How these settings work together

  • Setting the Exchange Method to Original Order Exchanges is what makes Set a default shipping charge available to enable.
  • Turning on Set a default shipping charge enables the default shipping charge amount field.
  • Turning on Deduct a return fee from refunds enables the Fee type selector, the flat amount field, the percentage field, and the Waive fee for Store Credit refunds checkbox. While that master toggle is off, all of those inputs stay disabled.

What changes when you turn this on

  • With Set a default shipping charge enabled, the shipping charge is added to the return as a shipping charge when the app creates exchange fulfillments on the original order, and it can be adjusted per exchange.
  • With Add an exchange fee by default, the selected Shopify product's price is charged once per exchange on the exchange order, regardless of the number of items, and can be toggled per exchange.
  • With Deduct a return fee from refunds, the configured flat amount or percentage is deducted from the refund total when returns are processed; enabling Waive fee for Store Credit refunds excludes gift-card/Store Credit refunds from that deduction.

Plan requirements

Set a default shipping charge is available only on the Advanced plan. The other fee settings have no separate plan requirement listed.
