Configuring Refund Options for the Original Order in Quick Exchanges

Updated Sep 29, 2026

These settings control what appears in the Refund panel of the original order when you process a Quick Exchange—whether the customer's original shipping and taxes are surfaced as refundable amounts, and whether you can issue a refund as store credit. Turn them on when you want more refund flexibility than the standard refund methods provide.

Where to find it

Go to Settings > Quick Exchanges > Original Order to reach these Refund Options. The store credit option is grouped under Settings > Quick Exchanges > Original Order > Refund Options.

Set it up

Each option is a checkbox you can toggle independently.

  1. Show the shipping paid on the original order — Displays the shipping fees the customer paid on the original order and gives you the option to include this amount in the total refund. When off, the original shipping fee is not shown as a refundable amount. Default: off (unchecked).

  2. Show the tax for refund products — Calculates the product tax on the items being refunded and gives you the option to include it in the total refund amount. Per the in-app helper text, this setting is primarily for USA sales taxes. When off, tax is not surfaced for refund products. Default: off (unchecked).

  3. Allow refunds as Store Credit (Digital Gift Card) — Shows an option to refund the customer with store credit in the form of a Shopify Digital Gift Card that is emailed to them. This appears alongside the standard refund methods. When off, only standard refund methods are offered. Default: off (unchecked).

What changes when you turn this on

Each checkbox is saved to your shop's app settings and defaults to off. Once saved, these preferences are read back when the original order's refund flow runs:

  • With Show the shipping paid on the original order enabled, the original shipping fee becomes visible in the Refund panel and can be added to the total refund.
  • With Show the tax for refund products enabled, product tax is calculated on the refunded items and can be added to the total refund.
  • With Allow refunds as Store Credit (Digital Gift Card) enabled, the store credit method appears in the Refund panel as an additional refund option, issuing a Shopify Digital Gift Card emailed to the customer.

When any option is off, that amount or method is simply not offered in the Refund panel.
